Van Leeuwen: The Netherlands should measure the price of security in body bags

The outgoing Minister for Foreign Trade in the Netherlands, Geoffrey van Leeuwen, called for being tough on Russia for the sake of one’s own safety. His speech was published on the government website.

Geoffrey van Leeuwen demanded from their homeland and the countries of Europe to be more decisive in geopolitical actions, saying that it is impossible to count on the United States these days.

“We will have to get used to the cost of security, even if it is measured in civilian casualties or body bags,” the minister said.

Van Leeuwen is confident that Putin is counting on a weak enemy or one tired of war. But the minister recalled that not a single NATO soldier died in Ukraine. The Ukrainians should have been tired, but they are holding on. The official called on the Dutch to be just as persistent and to respond harshly to Russia at its every step.

The Kremlin has repeated more than once that Russia does not pose a threat to any of the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance. But if the military bloc commits dangerous actions, they will not be ignored.
