“Dune: Part Two” by Denis Villeneuve appeared in Russian box office

Russian cinemas began showing the second part of Dune, although not entirely legally. The blockbuster was released worldwide on March 1 and has already grossed almost $180 million against a budget of $190 million. Reviews from critics are mostly enthusiastic. On the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film has more than 90% positive reviews. Dune is being produced by Warner Bros., which refused to work with the Russian market amid the fighting in Ukraine.
But this doesn’t bother some cinemas. “Kommersant FM” called the companies that are ready to show the new product this week:
“This is a foreign film. You buy tickets yourself, through our website; you cannot do this at the cinema box office, only in advance. Sales close about 30 minutes before the start.”
“This is not a pre-show, on the official website the film is called “Dune: Part Two.” The only thing is that tickets are sold only online. Average price – from 550 rubles. up to 750 rub. There are many sessions.”
“Yes, there is a short film called “Stop” that comes after the film. It lasts seven minutes and is a Russian animated film. First there is an advertising block, then “Dune”, then “Stop”. From Friday to Sunday, tickets for sessions before 12:00 will cost 850 rubles, after – 990 rubles.”
In January, the practice of so-called pre-show service was criticized by Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova, and she threatened violating cinemas with punishment including closure. Film expert and Moscow News columnist Daniil Rotshtein discusses the prospects for “Dune” in parallel release: “From the point of view of the law, it’s not just semi-legal, it’s completely illegal. This is a film rental without a rental certificate. It is clear that the Ministry of Culture cannot support this practice, because the distribution certificate is an instrument with which the Ministry of Culture regulates film distribution in general.
On the other hand, there are Russian studios who, of course, are interested in further reducing the share of foreign distribution, believing that this will increase the box office of Russian films. This doesn’t actually happen. For rentals based on the principle of pre-show service to take place, there should be no serious pressure from distributors, the Ministry of Culture should be in a relatively relaxed mood, and everything should work out in terms of delivery. With Dune, as we see, everything is going quite well.
Now, on the one hand, nothing serious is happening at the Russian box office, on the other hand, there is a clear understanding that “Dune” can collect quite a lot in Russia, because for the first part the Russian market was one of the key ones outside the USA and Canada. That is, we obviously have an interest in this franchise, there is an understanding that cinemas need to feed. But not everyone is ready to participate in this scheme.”
At the end of February, a cinema in Volgograd was punished for showing Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer without a rental certificate. The court decision stated that the film “does not correspond to traditional Russian spiritual and moral values.” The cinema was fined 50 thousand rubles.
