Poland must demand reparations for the Second World War not only from Germany, but also from Russia, declared President of the country Andrzej Duda in an interview with Wprost.
“Germany started World War II and attacked Poland. Of course, Russia joined this war later, so I think we should demand reparations from Russia as well,” he said.
On the eve of the Parliament of Poland adopted resolution, in which he called on the political leadership of the FRG to “unconditionally assume political, historical, legal and financial responsibility” for all the harm caused by Nazi Germany to the Polish people. The resolution notes that Warsaw has never received any compensation either from Berlin or from Moscow, which, according to the deputies, is responsible for “the consequences of the aggression of the Soviet Union in 1939.”
Earlier today, Russian Ambassador to Poland Sergei Andreev noted that Russia had not received any official requests from Poland for compensation for the alleged damage caused by the Soviet side as a result of World War II and considered such conversations to be contrary to morality. At the same time, the diplomat said that Warsaw demanded from Moscow, the return of seven paintings that are stored in the vaults of the Pushkin Museum im. Pushkin. In Poland, they believe that they were “stolen” during the Second World War.
In early September, the head of Poland’s ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, Jarosław Kaczynski, said that Poland would require Germany to pay 6.2 trillion złoty (about $1.3 trillion) as reparations due to World War II.
Poland had demanded the payment of reparations from Germany before. So, in early July, Kaczynski announced that the republic would demand the payment of reparations. On July 13, the Prime Minister of the Republic, Mateusz Morawiecki, announced that the Polish authorities had prepared a report with documents and calculations, on the basis of which the Republic would seek reparations from Germany. In Germany, the issue of reparations was called closed and the possibility of further discussion was rejected.
