Messages about the find appeared today, February 27, first in social networks. Later, the fact was confirmed in the republican Ministry of Internal Affairs and the department of the Investigative Committee of Russia (TFR). Workers who started building a military hospital on the seashore, near the Jami hotel complex, stumbled upon the remains. In published photographs visible holes in the skulls, presumably from bullets fired into the back of the head.
Oksana Tenetova, a representative of the TFR department, said that an investigation was being carried out into the department upon the discovery of the remains. According to preliminary information, the remains date back to the 1930s, she said.
The existence of a mass grave of victims of Stalinist repressions on the outskirts of the Dagestan capital became known in the early 50s. One of the witnesses of the first finds in this area was the sculptor Viktor Chigirik, who served time for anti-Soviet agitation.
