*Portorož – Slovenian Open Championship, women’s professional international tennis tournament, held in autumn under the auspices of the WTA in Portorož Slovenia on outdoor hard courts. Since 2021, it belongs to the WTA 250 with a prize pool of about $235,000 and a tournament bracket designed for 32 participants in singles and 16 doubles.
*Chennai – Tennis Tournament created on the eve of the 1996 season in New Delhi, India, as part of the Asian Spring Hard Series. The competition did not last long in this tennis complex and already held its second draw in Chennai.
On the eve of the 2001 season, the tournament changed its timing, moving to the very beginning of the year, becoming part of the January series of tournaments in the Eastern Hemisphere, preparatory to the Australian Open.
Winners and Finalists
Two tennis players managed to win this competition more than once: on account of the Spaniard Carlos Moya and the Croatian Marin Cilic, two victories each. For four years in a row – from 2002 to 2005 – the Thai Paradorn Srichapan played in the final of the Chennai competition, but won only one title during this time.
The final with the least struggle was held here in 2008: then the Russian Mikhail Youzhny gave only a game to the Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the decisive match.
The only time the representative of India played in the final of the singles competition in 2009: Somdev Devvarman lost this match to Marin Cilic in straight sets.
The doubles tournament was held during the heyday of the careers of two representatives of India: Leandra Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi. Five times as part of the same duet they reached the final in Chennai and won five times. They each also have one final with other partners: Mahesh (paired with Jonas Bjorkman) lost the 2005 final, and Leander (paired with Janko Tipsarevic) won the 2012 final.
Two tennis players managed to win the tournament in both singles and doubles: Zimbabwean Byron Black took the singles title in 1999, and doubles two years later; six years later, the Belgian Xavier Malisse repeated his achievements, simultaneously becoming the first athlete to win the tournament in both categories in the same year.
