“Heard automatic bursts”

The poet, philologist, author of publications in leading Russian magazines, books and literary monographs Oleg Minnullin left the capital of the DPR with his family at the beginning of the SVO. A scientist from Makeevka (a satellite town of Donetsk) changed not only his place of residence, but also his alma mater: now he teaches at the Southern Federal University of Rostov-on-Don. But, as recent events have shown, the city on the banks of the Don cannot be considered a rear one.

– Oleg Ramilievich, on the day of the Prigogine rebellion, where were you? What have you seen and heard?

– We live from the city center a few stops away – the Nakhichevan microdistrict, but when it all started, we didn’t go anywhere. At the university where I teach, defenses were canceled, exams were taken – everything was transferred to a remote format. We heard a couple of automatic bursts, but nothing special happened around us. Well, yes, “flashing lights” drove around the city, cars – either “ambulance”, or the police. The streets immediately became empty – but what they said that people were rowing food in supermarkets – I did not notice this. I calmly went to the nearest one – there were people there, as on a regular day off. We even took a walk in the Ostrovsky park.

I called up friends – do I need to leave, wait – what to do? But we did not take any radical steps, realizing that if something happens, then in Moscow, and not here. Those who are in the center, who are more conscious, immediately went. And we just followed the progress of Wagner on the Internet – Voronezh, Lipetsk, and at 9 pm we read that we had agreed and parted ways.

— When you left Donbass, what problems did you face in your new place?

– The main difficulties were with the work, but I was immediately offered a position at the literary department. I wrote letters in advance to philologists I know, who have any options for employment. There was an opportunity to go to Samara, Tyumen, but I chose Rostov-on-Don, because it is closer to home and more familiar. The South Russian element is very close to the Donetsk one. The apartment was rented easily – just pay the money, and there are many options. It is clear that the issue arose with a residence permit, it was necessary to arrange a child in a kindergarten. But the state met us halfway, and they didn’t require much from us to register: the eldest daughter went to school, the children were placed in a dance circle, they played chess for free all year.

During the year I visited three major scientific events – at the Institute of World Literature of St. Petersburg, in Kazan at a conference on documentary films and in Vologda at a festival dedicated to the work of Varlam Shalamov. The university supports such trips. I think that our family adapted easily. During this time, I can say, Russified.

Do you consider yourself a refugee? You left the region engulfed in hostilities, but the front line approached again for almost a day.

– There is a certain fatigue. A week before the start of the NWO, we announced an evacuation – we immediately went, because I have small children. We saw kilometer-long queues at gas stations and realized that the matter was serious. We lived with relatives in Sevastopol for six months, then Rostov. But now everyone is asking himself the question: sit still or do something? But we had already run so far from all this that we decided to stay here. I don’t feel like a refugee. Only on the first day of the evacuation, when at night they were looking for where to spend the night, but the clamp, which was at the beginning, left. There is no such feeling that I have become firmly on my feet, Bulgakov’s housing problem spoils not only Muscovites. But while we don’t think about it, we just live.

— What can be said about Rostov today?

– In the area of Budennovsky Prospekt, the road is broken, it needs to be repaired. The entrance to the circus was destroyed. But one day did not greatly affect our lives. Everything flows in its own way.
