Doctors taught a chatbot to determine dementia by human speech with an accuracy of up to 80%

Researchers at Drexel University in the US have found that a GPT-3 AI-based chatbot can detect Alzheimer’s disease from speech with high accuracy. More about the study writes scientific publication PLOS Digital Health.
Although dementia is still incurable, early diagnosis and treatment can significantly slow the progression of the disease. Since speech disorders are recorded in 60-80% of dementia patients, the researchers decided to turn their attention to tools that could detect even the most subtle dysfunction of oral speech.
For this, scientists used a bot created on the basis of GPT-3. Artificial intelligence was trained on examples of speech recordings of people with dementia and healthy people. So, the neural network has a way to determine what is characteristic of the speech of patients. The efficiency of the algorithm created by scientists, as studies show, reaches 80% – this is almost a quarter more accurate than other algorithms.
In the future, the scientists plan to create an application that can be used as a pre-diagnostic tool both at home and at the doctor’s office.
