In Cheboksary, doctors successfully removed a teratoma from a patient – a 40-centimeter tumor with teeth and hair. This was reported in the press center of the Republican Clinical Oncology Dispensary.
The patient went to the hospital with complaints of shortness of breath, constipation, weakness and significant abdominal enlargement. Doctors suspected ovarian cancer, but upon examination they discovered a large mass. The tumor put pressure on the organs, disrupting their functioning, and was fed from large vessels.
The procedure for removing the tumor, which occupied the entire abdominal cavity, lasted more than two hours. During the operation, doctors discovered fatty tissue, hair and teeth in the tumor.
The head of the gynecological oncology department, Dmitry Glyakin, explained that a mature teratoma is a benign tumor that forms from embryonic tissue. However, cases when the tumor reaches such gigantic sizes as his patient’s are extremely rare.
