Doctors conduct first gene therapy for Alzheimer’s disease in humans

Scientists from the US organization Lexeo Therapeutics announced the successful completion of the first block of trials of gene therapy for Alzheimer’s disease, informs New York Times.
Studies have shown that people with the APOE4 protein gene are more at risk of developing dementia, while a variation of the same gene – APOE2 – reduces this likelihood. Scientists have decided that a disease characterized by cognitive problems can be cured by engrafting the APOE2 gene in the human body.
The trials involved five people at high risk of dementia. Scientists injected people with APOE2 into the area between the skull and neck.
The results of the experiment showed that APOE2 proteins began to be produced in the cerebrospinal fluid of the subjects. This means that the therapy was successful.
Moreover, the subjects decreased the content of tau protein and beta-amyloids, a high concentration of which is typical for patients with dementia.
Scientists promised that they would soon begin the next stage of research.
