Doctor Vorobyov explained why Kostomarov was not sent abroad for treatment

Professor of the Moscow Medical Academy, Doctor of Medical Sciences Pavel Vorobyov told in an interview with Woman.ru, why the Olympic champion Roman Kostomarov, who lost his limbs in the hospital and survived a stroke, was not sent abroad for treatment.

“And why did you get the idea that in Germany his chances were higher than here?” The doctor answered the question with a question.

According to Vorobyov, “this is a stereotype that German doctors are better than ours” and, in his opinion, “it has no basis.”

Vorobyov explained: “I had the experience of my patients, they went there and the situation only worsened” and said that he would not “hope on German medicine.”

In addition, he noted that “in the state in which Kostomarov was, he simply would not have been taken.”

According to Vorobyov, the athlete “was immediately connected to a ventilator and ECMO, he could not breathe, the machines breathed for him, they drove blood.”

The professor emphasized: “They don’t fly in this state.”

Connection to life support devices, according to him, suggests that the patient’s body can not cope without outside help. If it is placed in extreme conditions, then the outcome can even be fatal.

“The body was on the verge,” the doctor said about Kostomarov. “And the oxygen pressure drops sharply in the plane, we all know that.”

According to him, “because of the decrease in oxygen,” “people fall into psychosis and behave inappropriately.”

“Can you imagine how a person who can’t even breathe on his own will behave?” Vorobyov noted. “He wouldn’t physically fly.”

Roman Kostomarov was admitted to the hospital on January 10 with a protracted cold. The publication reports that German doctors offered their help almost immediately, but in Moscow a team of the best specialists has already joined the case. Kostomarov was transferred to Kommunarka, where the best equipment and vast experience in the treatment of pulmonary diseases has been accumulated during the coronavirus pandemic.

At the same time, German doctors discussed treatment protocols with Russian colleagues.

“I think if the German doctors had some hope or a concrete proposal, Roma would have been sent already – there are no problems with this with his status,” said the first coach of Kostomarov, Lidia Karavaeva.

Denis Protsenko, the head physician of Kommunarka, reported that a bacterium was found in the skater’s blood, which indicated that the treatment would not be easy and, possibly, not without necrotic complications.

It soon became known that gangrene was developing on Kostomarov’s fingers and toes. As a result, his feet and several fingers were amputated.

And yesterday it became known that Kostomarov had a stroke, which led to blockage of blood vessels in the brain. The athlete spent the whole night in intensive care, he had blood sepsis, it was cleaned with plasmapheresis.
