Bathing a pregnant woman in an ice hole can provoke premature birth, it is also not recommended to plunge into cold water for the elderly and children, Andrey Tyazhelnikov, chief freelance specialist in primary health care for adults at the Moscow Health Department, warns in connection with the approaching Epiphany bathing.
Recall that Orthodox Christians celebrate the feast of the Epiphany on January 19, in Russia it is usually accompanied by mass bathing in ice water in specially designated ice holes.
According to the expert, in healthy people, in particular, those who regularly harden, the vessels are trained, and they cope with the stress that happens during swimming in ice water. Tyazhelnikov emphasized that in pregnant women, stress can lead to premature birth and other complications. As noted, there may be exceptions if a woman has been hardening for a long time before pregnancy, but there is still a risk.
In addition, the doctor warned that it is not recommended to plunge into cold water for the elderly, since their body is weakened by chronic diseases and such a load can provoke exacerbations.
