Doctor Romanova told who should not shave their armpits

In general, both men and women can shave their armpit hair. There are no strict prohibitions on depilation in this area, and we are talking not only about aesthetics, but also about hygiene. About this in conversation with “Gazeta.Ru” said Alena Romanova, a dermatovenereologist, cosmetologist at the SM-Clinic in St. Petersburg.

The expert pointed out that the vegetation in the armpits increases sweating, which provokes an unpleasant odor. “Moisture accumulates on the hair and creates favorable conditions for the reproduction of harmful bacteria,” Romanova emphasized. “Under their influence, sweat begins to decompose into unsaturated fatty acids and exude a recognizable smell.” The dermatologist added that shaving armpit hair slows down the formation of sweat and minimizes the risk of unwanted odors.

However, there are contraindications for such a procedure. Armpit hair should not be removed if there are cuts, wounds or inflammation. The hygiene procedure should also be postponed for rashes and various irritations, such as prickly heat. This disease occurs when the glands in the armpits are blocked and the natural thermoregulation of the body is disturbed. “Also, shaving your hair is not worth it for neoplasms in the armpit,” said Romanova. “In particular, we are talking about hydradenitis, a seal that develops against the background of a purulent-inflammatory process in the sweat glands.”

The dermatologist emphasized that all these contraindications are temporary. In such cases, first of all, it is necessary to cure the disease and take preventive measures to avoid their recurrence. “As soon as the problem can be solved, you can safely return to shaving your armpits,” Alena Romanova concluded.
