Measles is a serious infectious disease that is fraught with formidable complications. In particular, viral measles pneumonia, declared TV presenter and doctor Alexander Myasnikov. After suffering measles encephalitis, consequences are also possible in a few years. The teenager will begin to lose intelligence and become disabled.
He admitted that he would always be haunted by the vision of a common ward in an African hospital filled with children dying of measles pneumonia. He did not have ventilators, and the doctor was powerless to do anything.
Myasnikov called the measles virus one of the most contagious. The disease is transmitted even through the air, in the absence of direct airborne contact.
“The patient with measles was in the room and left, after 2-3 hours an unvaccinated person entered the room and became infected. Proven cases of infection on the plane are well known,” Myasnikov explained.
Before the introduction of the measles vaccine, two million children died each year. At the beginning of the century, the vaccination rate reached 70-80%. The coronavirus pandemic prevented the disease from being completely eradicated. As a result, the vaccination system for children around the world has been disrupted. In 2020, 117 million children in 37 countries missed mass vaccinations against measles and other diseases.
Alexander Myasnikov stressed that there is no cure for measles.
“It can only be prevented with vaccines, remember – two doses! The effectiveness of the vaccine is 90%. Those who have been ill have lifelong immunity,” the expert noted.
The TV presenter separately turned to the doctors and asked to check the blood for antibodies. If not, you should immediately get vaccinated. They are at risk, and adults have a particularly hard time with measles.
