In an interview with Sputnik radio, Doctor of Medical Sciences Roman Gorenkov told who should refrain from air travel and how to properly prepare for travel for people with chronic diseases. According to him, the takeoff and landing of the aircraft are accompanied by sharp changes in atmospheric pressure, the passenger in flight is stressed and spends hours in a sitting position, breathing insufficiently humidified air.
Dr. Gorenkov noted that air travel is dangerous for some people, especially those with hearing problems. He pointed out that pressure drops in flight can exacerbate such diseases, and gave the example of chronic inflammation of the middle ear, which is a contraindication for air travel.
In addition, the doctor believes that people with serious disorders of the cardiovascular system should also refrain from traveling by plane. People with chronic venous insufficiency are also at particular risk. Dr. Gorenkov explained that in such patients, prolonged sitting during the flight, combined with pressure fluctuations, can lead to acute thrombosis, and in some cases even pulmonary embolism.
