DM: The next epidemic to come out of China could be supergonorrhea

Researchers fear that China, which is the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, could allow a new infectious disease, supergonorrhea, to spread worldwide. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report saying that up to 98% of bacterial samples taken from gonorrhea patients in 13 provinces in China were able to bypass all leading antibiotics.
As the Daily Mail notes, the main concern among researchers was the fact that in China the incidence of the antibiotic-resistant strain is 40 times higher than in the US, UK and Canada.
The article says that so far the only effective antibiotic for treating this disease is ceftriaxone. But even to this, the percentage of resistant strains of bacteria in China is extremely high – 8.1. This suggests that entirely new drugs will soon need to be developed to combat infections.
The number of annual deaths worldwide from all types of antibiotic-resistant infections is projected to reach 10 million by 2050 unless urgent action is taken now to control the spread of these pathogens.
