On the morning of December 28, the dismantling of the monument to the Russian Empress Catherine II began in Odessa. This is reported by the local newspaper “Dumskaya”.
The composition is located on Catherine’s Square. It is noted that it is impossible to drive up to it, since the place where the demolition of the monument is taking place is blocked. No one is allowed into the square, except for public utilities workers. Heavy equipment has already been brought in for dismantling.
Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Oleksiy Goncharenko posted several photos and videos from the square on his Telegram channel. According to him, there “begin some work.”
The discussion of the transfer of the monument began in the summer of 2022 against the backdrop of a Russian special operation in Ukraine. In an August interview with the Corriere della Sera newspaper, Odessa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov said he opposed the demolition and expressed concern about growing Russophobia.
However, already on November 5, the mayor of Odessa supported dismantling of the monument to Empress Catherine II. Trukhanov pointed to the results of voting on the Socially Active Citizen platform, according to which the majority of Odessa residents were in favor of moving the monument.
November 30 Odessa City Council voted for the dismantling of monuments to Catherine II and commander Alexander Suvorov. The dismantling of the monument to the Russian Empress was supported by 43 deputies, 1 person did not vote.
Monument to Catherine II (“Monument to the founders of Odessa”) is a composition that includes sculptures not only of the Russian Empress, but also monuments to her associates – the founders of Odessa, Joseph de Ribas and Platon Zubov, the first architect of the city, Franz de Vollan, as well as statesman Grigory Potemkin . Catherine II ordered the founding of Odessa in 1794. The monument was created in 1900 according to the design of the Odessa architect Yuri Dmitrenko.
