Discovered secret rooms in an Egyptian pyramid stunned German archaeologists

Researchers have found previously unknown rooms in the pharaoh’s burial complex

Egyptian pyramids continue to baffle experts as new secret rooms are discovered. New rooms were discovered in the Sahura pyramid.

Despite years of research into Egypt’s archaeological treasures, researchers continue to uncover new secrets and mysteries of the ancient sites, the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg said in a statement recently.

New rooms were discovered in the pyramid of Sahura by researchers from Egypt and Germany. The effort, led by Egyptian-German Egyptologist Dr. Mohammed Ismail Khaled, is helping to shed light on the pyramid architecture of the second king of the Fifth Dynasty (2400 BC) and the first king buried at Abusir, the Jerusalem Post writes.

The pyramid of Sahura is a type of smooth pyramid and is located in Abusir north of Saqqara. In ancient times, this structure was called “the soul of Sakhur appearing in the light.”

Pharaoh Sahura of the fifth dynasty chose the same place where his predecessor Userkaf built his solar temple for the construction of his funerary complex. Thus, Sahura founded a new royal necropolis in the northern capital of Egypt – near Memphis in Abusir.

The Sakhura complex has undergone severe destruction of building rocks and currently the entire ensemble of this complex looks completely different from how it did in the times of Ancient Egypt.

Excavations there began in 2019, when researchers began work to stabilize the foundation so that research could begin safely. For the first time, archaeologists managed to secure the burial chambers of King Abusir.

The team discovered the original dimensions of the chamber and the layout of the hallway, which had deteriorated significantly. It was thanks to this discovery that researchers were able to discover new walls masking the destroyed old ones. The east wall of the hallway was heavily damaged and only the northeast corner and about 30 centimeters of the east wall were still visible.

A low passage that was originally discovered in 1836 by John Perring has been excavated. When the team came across the collapsing tunnel, it was completely blocked by rubble and the team was unable to navigate through it. The team was able to prove Perring’s theory that the passage led to storage areas.

Eight caches have been discovered so far, the Jerusalem Post reports.

Using state-of-the-art technology, including 3D laser scanning using a portable ZEB Horizon scanner, the researchers, together with the 3D Geoscan team, carried out detailed studies inside the pyramid. Using this technology allowed the team to create a comprehensive map of both the vast exterior spaces and the narrow corridors and chambers inside.
