Chinese grandmaster Ding Liren won the fourth game of the tie-break match for the chess crown with Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi and became the 17th world champion. The meeting was held in Astana.
Nepomniachtchi played with white pieces. Following the results of 14 games with classical time control, the opponents could not determine the winner (7:7), so the confrontation continued in a tie-break. The first three games ended in a draw, and on the fourth, Liren won on the 68th move, winning the tie-break with a score of 2.5:1.5.
Ding Liren is 30 years old. He won the 2019 Grand Chess Tour and won the Chinese Championship three times (2009, 2011, 2012), becoming the first world chess champion from China.
32-year-old Ian Nepomniachtchi has twice won the title of Russian champion (2010, 2020) and won the World Team Championship twice (2013, 2019). In 2010 he became the European champion. In 2021, in the fight for the world title, Ian Nepomniachtchi lost to Magnus Carlsen with a score of 3.5:7.5.
