Difficult questions, low scores: what happens at the exam

The Unified State Examination is in full swing, the second in a row graduates take the “basic” Russian language, where three in-depth tasks appeared. Officially, the results will be summed up during the period June 13 – July 5, but the first impressions are already there. Experts say that the school has approached the limits of the psychophysical abilities of children, and there is nowhere to complicate the exams further.
Schools believe that, despite promises not to make changes, the USE-2023 has been made more difficult for humanities students. In Russian, they made three difficult, almost university-level questions – and this is in the traditionally “easy” main exam, which 11-graders usually pass well. The complexity of the tasks has increased, but the points for them will be given less, 3 instead of 5.
For example, here is a “three-point” question number 21 on the demo. Punctuation task: find two sentences where the dash is placed according to the same rules. And in the examples there are non-union complex sentences, and sentences with plug-in constructions, with isolated members, with direct speech …
“Last year, Rosobrnadzor recorded a general drop in average scores in almost all subjects,” says an expert in the field of the Unified State Examination. – Therefore, there were talks that there was no need to change anything in the state exam. There are no major changes, but even small changes have consequences.
And if we go over the subjects, we will see that there are some changes almost everywhere. Chemistry – Complicated three tasks. History – yes, they added time to solve, but moreover, two tasks added a plus and the minimum score rose to 42. Social science, literature – there are changes.
As for geography, last year it was the least chosen subject, the most “forgotten” subject… They did not complicate it, but they did not simplify it either. And in-depth tasks, and points, everything is in place. Trial exams showed that this year the drop in scores in subjects, except perhaps for mathematics and English, will continue.
The graduates who have already written the exam are also at a loss from the complexity of most KIMs.
“Three hours is not enough”, “the tasks were all difficult” – reviews of this kind on the long-suffering geography on the Web. In 2022, geography was chosen by 2% of applicants, in 2023 – 3%.
At the Unified State Examination in Literature, judging by the reviews, many were surprised by the questions on Nekrasov’s poem “Who should live well in Rus’.” For some reason, everyone thought that they rarely asked about Nekrasov, they didn’t really prepare for him. As well as to Gorky, “At the Bottom”, to the analysis of this work in the context of “kindness and sympathy.” Numerous publics of graduates are stormy with emotions about literature. While some are happy that they received the “light” texts of Anatoly Aleksin and Nikolai Rubtsov for analysis, others are crying: they incorrectly indicated paronyms and commas in adverbial phrases. But about literature, it is known in advance that the subject is complex, which is why only 9% of graduates chose it.
Chemistry is another “confusing” exam that few people dare to take. This year, 13% of graduates dared to choose it. For admission, this subject is needed not only by chemists themselves, but also by biologists, including prestigious biotechnologies. And chemistry is also needed by aircraft and rocket designers, various production technologists, farmers, shipbuilders, landscape designers, and even in some places in IT.
– Everything was without surprises, – Yulia from Moscow, who plans to enter the medical school, shares after the exam in chemistry. – Someone less lucky than me: a classmate wrote that he could not remember a long OVR (oxidation-reduction reaction — Auth.) The girl alone in the corridor said that she had deduced the formula, but then she did not understand what to do next with her, she and the tutor did not get that far. Another cried and said that there was an error in the formula in the assignment. I don’t know about the appeal, but she immediately wanted to sign up for the reserve day, she will retake it.
– In order to retake the exam on a reserve day in the same year, it is better not to sit in the classroom until the end, – the expert advises. – Refer to illness, poor health and immediately sign up for a reserve date. In case of failure to pass the threshold score, only the main subjects of the Unified State Examination, Russian language and mathematics are automatically transferred to the reserve. Mathematics can be retaken the base if you have not passed the profile.
With additional items it is more difficult. If you served time to the end and wrote the work, you must immediately file an appeal. On violation of the order of the exam, on the order of organization, on the human factor. But rarely do teenagers who are under stress do this, and as a result they fly by with the exam until next year.
Unfortunately, not everyone can withstand the stress associated with the preparation and holding of “states”. In Moscow, a 9th grader tried to calm down before the exam and ate several sedatives. It’s good that he was quickly hospitalized, taken straight from the exam to the toxicology department. The graduate was saved, the guy admitted that he swallowed 6 tablets, “so as not to be nervous.” He was prescribed medication by a neurologist.
