Yuri Korolev was born in Vladimir. Condolences to the athlete’s family were also expressed by the governor of the Vladimir region Alexander Avdeev. “He is known and respected in his native region, they take and will take an example from him. He was a legend of Russian sports and at the same time a sympathetic, caring person, an athlete with a strong character, a real hard worker, an absolute authority for his students, his energy charged everyone around, ”the governor wrote in his Telegram.

Yuri Korolev has three silver and one bronze medals at world championships. He three times won the championship of the podium of the European Championships. At the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the athlete suffered a torn Achilles tendon. After the injury, he remained in the sport as a referee: he received the title of an international referee, worked in Europe and was a referee at the Beijing Olympics.

In recent years, Yuri Korolev worked as a coach at the Tolkachev Youth Sports School in Vladimir. Dmitry Barkalov, his pupil, received the title of the absolute champion of Russia.
