Details of the terrible crimes of the mafia group in Italy have been revealed

In Italy, the largest trial of the Italian mafia in 30 years ended last week. The trial involved 337 defendants, of whom 207 were found guilty. The number of crimes was so large that it took three judges almost two hours to announce the verdicts. The total period was 2200 years. The massive mafia trial in Italy last week involved the Italian crime group ‘Ndrangheta. Their case dealt with criminal activity in and around Vibo Valentia.

The case centered on five murders: the torture and revenge killing of two mafiosi in the summer of 1996; murder of a gay gangster in 2002; and another double murder in 2002. Three of these five bodies were never found.

Due to an unprecedented number of defectors, including the group’s main boss, Luigi Mancuso, other crimes were solved.

For example, anyone who refused to sell their land to the mafia was killed. This is what happened to Maria Chindamo. Her car was found near the gate of the fields she owned in the Mancuso fortress in Limbadi. This is where she hoped to build a small farming business. The engine was running and the driver’s door was open. But hair and blood were found on the asphalt next to the car. Chindamo’s disappearance came exactly one year after her husband committed suicide. This coincidence has led some to speculate that it was a revenge killing. But it turned out to be a gangster ruse.

The widow was killed precisely because she refused to sell the land to a neighbor with connections to the mafia. After the murder, her body was fed to pigs, who had been deliberately starved beforehand. The remains of the unfortunate bones were crushed by the bulldozer tracks.

Another victim was hung for three days and tortured with cattle hoof trimmers the entire time. Another was “shredded by a tractor cultivator.” According to one pentito (a mafioso who is “tied up” with crime), a young biologist named Matteo Vinci was the victim of a car bomb explosion: both his legs were broken. Unable to get out of the car, he burned to death.

The group also used methods of intimidation. One entrepreneur, who refused to pay the mafia 2,000 euros a month, discovered a dead dolphin under the windows of his construction company. Another businessman, the owner of a fashion store, discovered a dead puppy hanging on the door of his store. His paws were broken. People found severed heads of goats, and they burned cars.

Another pentito told how criminals attacked hospital morgues. Their job was to make sure that the mourners’ relatives went to the “right funeral home.”

Criminal clans even became the owners of tombs and coffin niches in the Wibo cemetery. Bandits could then sell these places to grieving families at exorbitant prices. This cemetery was also used to hide weapons.

Ambulances were used as personal taxis to transport fugitives from one city to another. Sometimes they were also used to transport illegal substances.

Water flowing from village fountains was directed to cannabis plantations. Most people were too scared to report what was happening: anyone who denounces the mafia usually disappears almost instantly.

Construction companies in areas under the control of the mafia were forced to use the company of gangsters to carry out any activity.

The Mafia controlled parts of the refugee centers, large tracts of the region’s valuable orange groves, and had minions in the huge port of Gioia Tauro. The ‘Ndrangheta’s annual turnover is estimated at £49 billion.

The trial showed how the “tentacles” of the ‘Ndrangheta penetrated almost every corner of Calabria. After the trial, Deputy Prosecutor Vincenzo Capomolla said that the ‘Ndrangheta “is so deeply rooted, so widespread and so alarming that I think there was not a single aspect of life, or the economic and social structure of the province, that was not determined by the terrifying power of this criminal organization.”

It turned out that access to all types of jobs – even in the public sector – was controlled by criminal cartels: if you want to work as a cleaner in a hospital or in a school cafeteria, you have to go with an outstretched hand to the local mafia.
