Russian businessman Oleg Deripaska, whose fortune Forbes estimates at $1.7 billion, has called on society to eliminate nuclear weapons and ban them altogether.
On the eve of Kazumi Matsui – the mayor of Hiroshima, which experienced the nuclear attack on August 6, 1945 – spoke in favor of a universal ban on nuclear weapons. At the same time, the Japanese quoted the words of the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy: “You cannot build happiness on someone else’s misfortune, but it is in the happiness of others that your happiness is hidden.”
“Yesterday, as always, the World Day for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons passed unnoticed,” Deripaska complained on his Telegram channel. According to him, nuclear weapons hang over the world like the sword of Damocles, threatening to destroy it “in just a few hours.”
The billionaire recalled that the creator of the Soviet hydrogen bomb and Nobel Peace Prize winner Academician Andrei Sakharov, as well as “many other scientists have consistently tried to achieve a solution to this problem.”
In May, Deripaska posted on social media that nuclear war was not the way out and quoted Sakharov as calling it “collective suicide.” The businessman urged humanity to grow up.
