State Duma deputy Oleg Nilov proposed renaming the Gulf of Finland in response to Helsinki’s actions. He announced this at the press approach before the plenary meeting, reports “Duma.TV”.
“There is a proposal to return its name. Exactly 300 years ago, in 1723, Peter I, by decree, establishing and founding Kronstadt, named this bay Kronstadt,” said Mr. Nilov.
According to him, the corresponding request came from St. Petersburg residents. The deputy emphasized that the idea was voiced to rename the Gulf of Finland to Nevsky and that he supports this.
On website The toponymic portal of St. Petersburg indicates that the Gulf of Finland in the 16th century was called the Livonian Gulf, and in the Novgorod chronicles it was called Kotlin Lake (in honor of the island of Kotlin, on which Kronstadt was later founded). The name Gulf of Finland as a translation from Finnish has been known since the 1710s. Moreover, in 1737–1793 the name Kronstadt Bay was also used.
In November, the Finnish Ministry of Internal Affairs announced restrictions on traffic on the border with Russia. The measures were taken due to the growing number of illegal migrants crossing the Russian-Finnish border. Since November 18, Finland has closed four checkpoints on the border with the Russian Federation. From November 30 to December 13 Helsinki closes all crossings on the border with Russia.
