Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Vershinin said after the completion of negotiations in Istanbul on the extension of the Black Sea initiative that the deal will cease to exist if it is not possible to reach a consensus on its extension by May 18, taking into account Russia’s interests.

“Naturally, we are primarily protecting Russia’s national interests,” Vershinin said, adding that he was talking about Russian agricultural and fertilizer producers.

He also drew attention to the fact that the previous decision to extend the grain deal for 60 days expires on May 18.

“We are not going to act in defiance or contrary to our interests,” Vershinin emphasized.
