Extraordinary session of the IOC took the status of the IBA almost unanimously
The IOC stripped the International Boxing Association (IBA) of recognition status at an extraordinary session, calling the decision “the only logical one”. And he said that the IBA under the current conditions “cannot organize a qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games – 2024.” The session almost unanimously supported the proposal of the executive committee (out of 70 members of the organization, only one was against it).
As you know, the recently held IOC executive committee recommended to de-recognize the IBA, headed by Umar Kremlev, arguing that the International Boxing Association did not fulfill the conditions of the road map. Two days before the decision of the Executive Board, the IBA notified the IOC in a letter that all the requirements put forward for reinstatement had been fulfilled. And following the decision of the executive committee, the IBA filed an appeal with the CAS and asked the court to suspend the IOC recommendations until the final verdict of the court is issued.
And on the very first day of the current meeting of the Executive Committee, even before the extraordinary session, the IOC issued a statement in response to harsh statements from the IBA. The Board indicated that it “condemns the aggressive and threatening” statements of the President of the IBA against a number of persons from the IOC. (Umar Kremlev emphasized that the IBA has no problem with the IOC or the Olympic movement, but with some individuals who try to destroy boxing “in pursuit of personal gain and hide under suits and ties in their imaginary pocket corporations.” Even earlier, he talked about the crimes of the former head of the organization and that the IOC staff covered him.)
A little later on the same day it became known that the Court of Arbitration for Sport refused to suspend the recommendations of the IOC Executive Board to withdraw the recognition. And the fate of the IBA was already finally decided before the session.
Commenting on the situation, Thomas Bach stated that the IOC “has no problem with boxing, no problem with boxers.” If they were, then the Olympic tournament in Tokyo 2020 would not have taken place (it was organized by the IOC directly, without the participation of the International Boxing Association, already limited in rights). “We have a high regard for boxing, but unfortunately we have very serious problems with the IBA because of their management,” Bach said.
The IOC believes that over the years there has been a lack of proper communication between the structures. “We’ve passed the point of no return.” But IOC Director-General Christophe De Koepper has said he will guarantee boxing’s return to the Olympics in 2028.
De Koepper stressed that the IBA has shown “total disrespect for the principles of international sport in the run-up to the 2024 Olympics.” And she showed a “misunderstanding” of what the IOC wanted to see from her. “To protect the interests of the sport, we have decided to give the IBA a second chance. In 2019, the IBA did not meet our requirements. But she did little to nothing to change the situation. As a result, we came to the conclusion that the IBA should not organize a boxing tournament at the Paris Olympics and there are recommendations that the organization should not organize a boxing tournament at the 2028 Olympics.”
If everything is clear with the Olympic Games – the IOC took over the functions of selecting and organizing the tournament, as in Tokyo 2020, then there may be problems with the future of the International Boxing Association itself. An alternative organization, World Boxing, has already been created, although it has not yet begun practical work and is not recognized by the IOC. The main question is how many national federations the IBA can hold.
