Medvestnik: Demand for surrogacy programs has dropped sharply in Russia
According to the results of the first quarter of 2023, the number of families applying for surrogacy services has sharply decreased in the Russian Federation. They told about it “Medvestnik” in specialized clinics of assisted reproductive technologies. At the same time, experts note that the drop in demand will only intensify against the background of the law adopted in December 2022 banning surrogacy for foreigners.
Thus, the founder of the Asmed Association of Surrogate Mothers and Oocyte Donors, Elena Litvishko, announced a fourfold drop in demand: in the first quarter, only four couples applied for a surrogate mother. And for the same period in 2022, there were 16.
Nino Kakuchaya, the chief physician of the Moscow clinic “Mak IVF”, said that from January to March, only one person took advantage of the surrogacy program, and last year – six.
Among the reasons for the refusal of surrogate motherhood programs, the interlocutors of the publication called the departure of some patients abroad. Also, one of the main reasons is the desire of genetic parents to “wait out the period of instability”.
Demand also reduced the rise in prices for the services of surrogate mothers, the newspaper writes.
Legislative restrictions have also contributed. The law adopted in December assumes that only married citizens of the Russian Federation or single women can sign a contract for the provision of services with a surrogate mother. With the enactment of the law, foreigners are prohibited from carrying out such procedures (with the exception of those who are married to a citizen of the Russian Federation).
The new law also introduced a ban on the use of partial donation – that is, only women with their own eggs can use the surrogacy program.
