Defense of WSJ journalist Gershkovich appealed his arrest

The defense of the American journalist The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) Evan Gershkovich, who is now in jail on a criminal case of espionage, filed an appeal against his arrest.
The complaint of the journalist’s lawyers from the United States was received by the Lefortovo Court of Moscow today, April 3, the date for its consideration in the Moscow City Court has not yet been set, reports Interfax.
Evan Gershkovich was detained by the FSB on March 30 in Yekaterinburg, after which the journalist was sent to Moscow and arrested. According to the intelligence service, he “on the instructions of the United States was collecting information about one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex, which constitute a state secret.” The journalist was arrested until May 29 under Art. 276 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Espionage”). He faces up to 20 years in prison.
US President Joe Biden and the editors of The Wall Street Journal called for the release of the journalist. Head of European Diplomacy Josep Borrell declaredthat the Russian leadership neglects the freedom of the press.
