The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) may decide to participate or boycott the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris by the end of July after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announces its own decision on the matter. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Chernyshenko.

In conversation with “Interfax” Mr. Chernyshenko was asked if a boycott of the 2024 Olympics is possible if the requirements for participation for Russian athletes are not relaxed. “Everyone in the near future, already in July, is waiting for the final decision of the IOC on the participation of Russian and Belarusian teams. Based on its results, our Olympic Committee will have the right to make a decision that is in line with the Olympic principles and our interests,” he said in response.

Dmitry Chernyshenko added that Russia’s position on the recommendations of the IOC on the participation of Russians in international sports competitions has not changed. He recalled that, according to the ROC, the IOC criteria are discriminatory, and also violate the rights of athletes, the principles of the UN and the Olympic Charter.

In March 2022, athletes from Russia and Belarus were banned from participating in international competitions following the recommendation of the IOC. A year later, the IOC recommended that representatives of these two countries be admitted to tournaments, only those athletes who are not connected with the army, do not receive funding from the state and did not speak out in support of the Russian military operation in Ukraine can be admitted to the competition.
