December 13 – Relax

December 13 in the folk calendar – Andrey Zimny. This day got its name in honor of the Apostle Andrew the First-Called, who in Rus’ was considered the patron saint of maritime affairs and family life.

On this day, special honor and respect were awarded to everyone whose work is at least connected with the sea – sailors, fishermen, people who are engaged in the construction, repair or maintenance of ships, boats, fishing gear. It was believed that neglect of such people threatens with problems and failures in life.

On December 13, they began to prepare for Christmas. From that day until Epiphany, January 19, women did not do needlework, and men did construction and repair. Long trips were postponed until spring. They did not lend or borrow money.

In the evening, a festive table was laid. At the same time, there was a tradition before starting a meal to express gratitude to the hostess, after which the hostess herself thanked the audience and wished them well-being. Our ancestors believed that such a dinner would bring prosperity and good luck to all those gathered. And it was a good omen for the owners of the house if a man came first of the guests.

Dishes with garlic were always served on the table. There was a belief that on this day garlic would not only protect against ailments, but also cleanse the body and soul.

On Andrey Zimny, the weather for the winter was predicted by water. To do this, they made a hole or an ice hole on the river and looked at the water: if it flowed calmly, it was believed that the winter would be mild and without cataclysms, and if it boiled and splashed, besides, buzz and noise were heard from under the ice – a frosty winter was expected, with blizzards and snowstorms.

According to folk signs, mental work on this day will not bring any benefit. So you should allow yourself to relax in order to save strength and sanity.
