Death toll from Yerevan shopping mall explosion rises to six

The death toll from an explosion at Yerevan’s Surmalu shopping center has risen to six, the Armenian Health Ministry said. “As a result of the explosion in the Surmalu shopping center, 6 people were killed,” the agency published updated data on its Telegram channel. It is noted that the number of victims who applied to medical centers has reached 61. Experts assess the condition of 21 of them as moderate. The remaining patients were discharged after examination.
On August 14, a powerful explosion occurred in the Surmalu shopping center in Yerevan. It was reported that more than 50 people were injured as a result. A wave of smoke and dust quickly spread through neighboring streets, as can be seen from the videos that local residents began to distribute on social networks. According to eyewitnesses interviewed by Sputnik Armenia and News.am, the explosion that turned into a fire initially occurred in a warehouse where pyrotechnic products could be stored.
The Investigative Committee of Armenia opened criminal cases under two articles – on violation of fire safety rules, which negligently resulted in the death of a person, and violation of the rules for storing flammable substances, which also resulted in the death of a person. The reasons for the incident are being established.
