On September 3, after another shelling, the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) again lost contact with the power transmission line that supplies energy to the territory controlled by Ukraine. This was reported at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the evening of September 3. The first time it happened on August 25, but soon the power supply was restored. According to experts interviewed by Vedomosti, these and other damages, which became known during the visit of the IAEA mission, do not yet have a critical impact on the nuclear safety of ZNPP.
According to a spokesman for the agency, the management of the plant (subordinate to the Ukrainian nuclear concern Energoatom) informed the IAEA team that one of the two operating units, the fifth, was disconnected on the afternoon of September 3 due to network restrictions. The station’s single reactor generates electricity for cooling and other critical safety functions at the site, as well as for nearby consumers.
