The damage from rotavirus infection in Russia increased by 38% in 2022, amounting to 9.4 billion rubles. This is reported by Vedomosti with reference to the report of Rospotrebnadzor. Nearly half of all cases of acute intestinal infections last year were caused by rotavirus, with an incidence of about 62 per 100,000 population.
The spread of rotavirus infection in different regions of Russia was uneven. The highest incidence rates were recorded in the Vologda Oblast (216.46 per 100,000 population), Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug (194.34 per 100,000 population) and Primorsky Krai (188.73 per 100,000 population). A particularly high incidence was noted among children aged one to two years, where the rate was 1063.08 per 100,000 population. In Tuva and North Ossetia, the incidence among preschool children was the highest, respectively 35.08% and 30.35%.
It is also noted that the death rate from intestinal infections in Russia as a whole increased by 8.1% in 2022 compared to the previous year, reaching 495 people. Doctors note that rotavirus infection can cause various complications, including endocrine and allergic diseases such as bronchial asthma, as well as intestinal dysfunction.
According to experts, the increase in the incidence of rotavirus infection in Russia is primarily associated with the lifting of restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resumption of tourist trips to other countries. However, there are regions where, due to preventive vaccinations, the incidence is decreasing.
