Canada plans to allow euthanasia of mentally ill patients due to the fact that the country’s healthcare system can not cope with their number, claims Daily Mail.
According to the publication, mentally ill Canadians will be eligible for euthanasia a few months after the application is submitted. The application will have to be approved by only two doctors.
Doctors interviewed told the publication that such an innovation could turn euthanasia into a standard treatment for mental illness. Some also believe that this could lead to the use of euthanasia for the poor and disabled.
University of Toronto professor Trudo Lemmens criticized the initiative. He noted that people with severe depression could be offered euthanasia instead of therapy. Lemmens called such a system a “perverted concept of autonomy”.
The right to euthanasia in Canada was legalized in 2016. In 2021, 10 thousand people underwent this procedure. Initially, only patients in an incurable condition, in which death would be inevitable, could voluntarily die. But as of 2021, changes have been made to allow euthanasia for those whose symptoms doctors have deemed “unbearable,” even if they were not fatal.
