Cybertruck succumbed to rust – Kommersant FM

Tesla Cybertruck buyers are complaining about rust. This problem was first raised on a forum for owners of a new electric pickup truck: one user said that his car began to become covered in small spots after just two days of rain. Then more and more similar messages began to appear. In particular, the owner of the Cybertruck posted a video on YouTube in which he shows the hood of the car with rust.

Earlier, there were reports in the media about another problem with the car. In practice, it turned out that the factory aerodynamic wheel caps scratched the tires. This becomes noticeable after 3 thousand kilometers. With further operation, as Electrek writes, the risk of an emergency increases.

Could problems with the new pickup truck harm Tesla’s image? The editor-in-chief of the Za Rulem magazine, Maxim Kadakov, doubts this: “We are talking about some one-time cases that are associated not only with rust. At the same time, it is not completely clear what is rusting: either the body itself, or some suspension elements and some smaller parts that are made, of course, not from stainless steel, but from ordinary painted metal.

There are other complaints, for example, drivers of the Cybertruck start to drive like they drive Ford or Chevrolet pickups, but the chassis is not designed for this. And there are already cases when the wheels of a car fell off, that is, the rear suspension broke when trying to drift somewhere across the field.

The car was obviously made quickly, but not finished. But the level of hype and the queue for Cybertruck are such that everything will depend on the magnitude and number of these problems.

If their number is, relatively speaking, one-time, then all this will remain in the shadows. If appeals and dissatisfaction are truly widespread, then this may affect the company’s reputation. At the same time, Americans are not us. They will not just complain, but demand satisfaction, that is, financial satisfaction, even to the point of some kind of legal proceedings. This will not affect Musk himself in any way, nor will it bring down the company, but it will, of course, have a negative impact on its reputation. This is not a very good sign.

At the same time, if demand drops sharply after all these complaints, then we can talk about a drop in car prices. But in the near future I don’t yet see any reason for the cost of the car to go down.”

In Russia, Cybertruck will cost 10-15 million rubles. depending on modification. And the start of deliveries is scheduled for the third quarter of 2024. The founder of the Avtotaster company, Ararat Mardoyan, does not rule out that buyers will face serious difficulties if a Tesla car requires repairs:

“You still buy a Cybertruck not to have a main car, but just to have it in your garage. We calculated: if you bring a car, then its cost will be exactly 15 million rubles. People who contacted us saw the risk that there was a problem with service, because there are very few of them in Europe, and it is difficult to get spare parts, and the logistics are extremely, extremely difficult.

If someone, due to their status, needs to have a Cybertruck in their garage, then even rust will not be an obstacle to the purchase. But there will be no mass import of cars here.”

The first electric pickup trucks, according to Tesla’s plans, were supposed to roll off the assembly line in 2021. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and problems with the supply of parts, the deadlines have been pushed back. As a result, serial production of the Cybertruck model started only in the summer of 2023. And the initially announced price of the car at $40 thousand by the start of sales increased to Cybertruck $60 thousand.
