There were three matches at the group stage of the Russian Football Cup. After a goalless draw in regular time, Ural defeated CSKA in a penalty shootout 5-4 and moved up to first place in Group D with 11 points. But both of them guaranteed themselves participation in the upper play-off bracket for the clubs of the Russian Premier leagues (RPL). Torpedo, having lost on penalties to Sochi 2:4 after a 1:1 draw in regular time, took third place ahead of schedule and will continue to fight in another quarterfinal, which will include teams that follow the so-called “Road of Regions”.
before the fifth round CSKA and “Ural” with nine points, they shared the lead in group D, while the army team was higher thanks to a victory in a personal meeting. But now the teams met in Yekaterinburg, where the hosts had good chances to take revenge. Moreover, under Viktor Goncharenko, Ural noticeably improved and simply stopped losing, giving out a series of seven matches without defeat in the Russian championship, and won two more victories in this segment of the season in the Cup. CSKA also lost a lot of points in the championship before the winter break, and lost to Torpedo in the National Cup.
In Yekaterinburg, it froze noticeably, and it is not surprising that the players moved very energetically across the field. But Muscovites still acted more energetically, attacking more and more sharply.
Ivan Oblyakov especially stood out among them, who both pressed and distributed passes to partners, and even completed the combinations himself. True, Yekaterinburg did not allow creating very obvious scoring chances. In the first half, probably, only CSKA midfielder Baktiyor Zainutdinov was the closest to a goal, but he hit his head next to the post.
The biggest resonance before the break was caused by two episodes in which the referees seemed to have the right to award a penalty. First, the soldier Kirill Nababkin played along with his hand in the fight for the ball with Andrey Egorychev, and then the Uralian Mingiyan Beveev also blocked the opponent’s blow with his hand. But VAR in both cases considered that there were not enough grounds for imposing capital punishment on football. Moreover, in the debut of the second half, the chief referee Artem Chistyakov also canceled the goal of CSKA forward Anton Zabolotny.
After the break, “Ural” finally delivered the first more or less dangerous shot to the goal of Vladislav Torop, who was in danger of becoming completely numb in the absence of work.
Eric Bicfalvi headed the cross into the penalty area and missed the target. But the right side of the red-blue Milan Gaich did not get into an almost empty corner when he overtook goalkeeper Ilya Pomazun after Zainutdinov’s serve. But in general, the game was leveled, and the hosts sometimes even better controlled the ball.
Game time still ended in a draw 0:0, and there were no penalties in this match. In the 11-meter series, the army man Moises immediately made a mistake, hitting the post, and in Yekaterinburg, during the execution of the last blow of the main session, Yevgeny Tatarinov faltered, who could bring victory to his team and missed. However, in the extra round, Pomazun did not let Nikita Ermakov score, while Silvie Begich was accurate. Ural won 5:4 and topped the group with 11 points. CSKA, which received the minimum bonus, now has ten points.
In another match of this group “Torpedo” took “Sochi”. The capital club scored in four rounds of the Cup of Russia as many points as in 17 rounds of the championship – six. Theoretically, Muscovites still retained the opportunity to reach the playoffs even from the first or second place. And the Black Sea, despite the zero in their piggy bank, formally did not lose the chance to break through there from the third position. To begin with, they had to defeat Torpedo by three goals, because in Sochi the black-and-whites won 3:1.
Now Joaozinho put the guests ahead in the second half, but David Karaev quickly restored the balance with a beautiful shot from outside the penalty area. The main time and ended – 1:1. Regardless of the outcome of the penalty shootout, the Sochi team lost their cup prospects ahead of schedule, nevertheless they surpassed Torpedo – 4: 2. Thus, everything is already clear in this quartet. Ural and CSKA will play in the quarterfinals of the part of the bracket that belongs to the RPL Way.
The Torpedo team will move on to the “Path of Regions”, where the Premier League teams that finished third in the group stage will face the strongest representatives of the lower divisions.
One more match took place in group A, where the first-placed “Paris Nizhny Novgorod” visited an outsider “Khimki”. After Mikhail Galaktionov left for Lokomotiv, Anton Khazov led the Nizhny Novgorod team as acting head coach. Khimki mentor Spartak Gogniev tried to overshadow the premiere of his colleague. The hosts took the lead after Alexander Rudenko’s goal. Viktor Alexandrov equalized.
As a result, post-match penalties had to be beaten in this meeting as well. Nizhny had already sorted things out with Khimki in the same way in the second round, and now the Volga team won again – 3:1. As part of the Moscow Region club, as many as three out of four football players did not realize their attempts, and the turn did not reach the fifth at all. Nizhny Novgorod with ten points still claim the first place. Khimki also finally parted with hopes of leaving the group.
