“Crazy wave”: Sevastopol residents described the situation after the attack on the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet

After the missile attack, the townspeople found out where their bomb shelters were in the city.

Sevastopol is recovering from the morning attack on the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet. Residents began to suspect that something was happening around the city in the morning, when a dense camouflage smoke screen began to spread over the bays with ships. Messages about this appeared in public pages. Since this was not the first time, our friends, answering our calls, said that nothing special was happening in the city. And then there was a roar.

“The shock wave was strong, my ears were blocked.” “Smoke is rising above the Black Sea Fleet headquarters,” residents wrote in local chats. The headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol stands on a hill, surrounded by a small park area.

Since the facility is military and guarded, Sevastopol residents do not particularly walk there. The nearest residential buildings are located at a distance, but glass still blew out in ten of them. There were no civilian casualties in the city.

Local resident Veronica, who was in the center during the explosion, told MK: “The center was blocked off. A bunch of cars with flashing lights. The blast wave was crazy. A fragment fell near the Lunacharsky Theater.”

After the explosion in Sevastopol, an air raid alert sounded. The townspeople were asked to move to the nearest shelters.

Sevastopol resident Dmitry said: “On Zhidilov Street the siren could be heard from afar. We headed to the shelter, and it was completely unprepared: the ventilation was terrible, the children couldn’t breathe, they were there for 30 minutes.”

School and college students were also evacuated to the basements. And here’s what Valentina, a resident of Sevastopol, who was at the bus station at that time, says: “There were a lot of people at Zakharov’s bus station during the arrival, there was no siren. The perception was different, but the notification there was zero. Everyone was standing and sitting on the street.”

The city center was immediately blocked off. Some of the fragments from the rocket scattered through the streets within a radius of several kilometers. A large piece of debris fell near the Lunacharsky Theater. “What about the theater? Is it not damaged? My friends work there, but they don’t answer the phone. We are worried,” wrote one of the city residents. “The theater is fine. They don’t fit because there are interruptions in communication at the center,” they answered him a few minutes later.

It was indeed difficult to get into the central part of the city during the day. Bus and trolleybus routes have been expanded. Transport was allowed only to Suvorov Square and Ushakov Square. Some of the cars were stuck in traffic jams. The northern side could only be reached from the Balakava highway.

How people working in the center will leave the city in the evening is not very clear. But, probably, cars will still be allowed through from the center. The missile warning has already been lifted.

Gas, electricity and partly water were temporarily cut off in homes and institutions in central areas. The city’s governor, Mikhail Razvozzhaev, warned that water pressure had been reduced due to the fact that large quantities of it were required to extinguish the damaged building of the Black Sea Fleet headquarters.

At the time we were writing this material, city authorities announced a partial evacuation of a number of citizens from the streets near the headquarters in order to avoid the risk of collecting parts of the fallen rocket. After this, people will return to their homes.
