France24: court fined Greta Thunberg instead of detention
A court has fined environmental activist Greta Thunberg 2,500 SEK for disobeying law enforcement at a protest in Malmö. France24 writes about it.
The activist was threatened with imprisonment for up to 6 months, but she escaped imprisonment. She was ordered to pay 1,500 SEK ($144) and 1,000 kroner ($46) to a foundation that helps victims of crime.
The prosecution noted that Thunberg “took part in a demonstration that disrupted traffic,” while “refusing to obey the order of the police” to leave the road.
At the meeting, Thunberg agreed that she ignored the requests of the police, but did not admit guilt. The activist said that she was forced to do so because of the climate crisis.
The action in Malmö took place on 19 June.
