A court in Germany lifted a ban on placing Ukrainian flags on Soviet memorials on May 9, Sputnik reports.

At the same time, the ban on the placement of Russian flags, as well as St. George ribbons and paraphernalia with the symbols “Z” and “V”, was preserved. This applies to Soviet memorials in Treptow Park, Tiergarten and Schoenholzer Heide, the German edition of Tagesspiegel reports. Earlier it was reported that Ukrainian flags were also banned.

On Victory Day, thousands of Russian-speaking citizens traditionally gather near the memorial in Treptow Park in Berlin. Last year, Soviet, Russian and Ukrainian flags were also banned on this day.

As Radio Berlin-Brandenburg explains, the police can still appeal the decision of the administrative court to the Higher Administrative Court of Berlin and Brandenburg.

On Friday, the Berlin police announced that they would again, like a year ago, ban the use of Russian and Ukrainian flags during commemorative events in honor of the victory in World War II on May 8 and 9 in the areas of three main Soviet war memorials located in the German capital: Treptow- park, Tiergarten and Schönholzer Heide.
