The court charged the ex-premier in a case of selling gifts from foreign heads of state for $127,700 and embezzling the proceeds. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) requested 14 days for Khan. The ex-premier’s lawyer noted that this issue is not within the competence of the department, and added that NAB has not submitted an investigation report.
Imran Khan was removed from power in April 2022 by parliament. Then 174 out of 342 deputies voted for it, with the necessary 172. According to the ex-premier, foreign states, in particular the United States, were behind his removal.
Khan was arrested in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad on May 9. The arrest warrant was issued by the anti-corruption body – NAB. The former prime minister denies the allegations and points to their political nature.
The ex-premier was arrested on the fourth attempt. The Islamabad District Court issued a decision on his arrest on February 28. After that, the police tried to detain him at home three times, but faced fierce resistance from Khan’s supporters or did not find him at his home address.
