Every third courier in Russia is a certified specialist with a higher education, according to the HeadHunter service. And according to Yandex Delivery, there are even more of them – about 40%. Most often, economists, engineers and IT specialists work as couriers, analysts have found out.
But, as a rule, this is not the main place of employment, but only temporary part-time work, clarified the official representative of the Yandex Delivery service Lyudmila Ignatieva:
“It turned out that almost 40% of couriers have higher or incomplete higher education, and another third have specialized secondary education. The study also confirmed that in most cases, working as a courier is chosen as an additional job.
More than 80% of respondents have been employed in the delivery industry for less than a year, more than 40% of survey participants work in another industry in parallel with courier services, and every fifth respondent combines part-time work with study. Often people go to work part-time in delivery when they want to radically change their field of activity. Yandex Delivery found that almost every fifth courier receives additional education in conjunction with courier work, for example, learning a new profession, learning languages or taking driving courses. Every eighth person noted that they are developing their own business.”
The work of a courier became popular a few years ago, when the number of such services increased sharply due to the pandemic. In addition, wages in this area are constantly growing. Over the past year alone, they have increased by about 30%, Yandex specified. For example, the income of car couriers in Moscow on some days can reach 900 rubles. at one o’clock. But not everyone is hired for these positions. To do this, you need to have certain competencies, notes HR Director of Courier Service Express Galina Kezikova:
“There is a certain specificity in the position of a courier. This job suits people who are sociable, open-minded, and they find a lot of positive aspects in it. This is not just a question of salary, because when working as a courier, you also need to have certain competencies. This area of activity should be suitable and pleasant.
How much can you earn? If we are talking about a walking delivery worker, then wages over the last year, for example, have increased by more than 25%. And for courier drivers the increase is many times higher, especially with a personal truck – on average 100-150 thousand rubles.”
In some logistics companies, the courier is one of the key positions. And candidates are selected through interviews and testing. It is preferable that the applicant have a higher education, says Daria Latyshkova, head of brand development at SDEK:
“We have a fairly serious dropout. There are two stages of interviews, and we make sure to select and evaluate personnel, regardless of position and in accordance with our values. It is very important that employees are truly open and want to help other people. It’s not just bringing, giving and leaving.
Couriers work directly with customer requests, prepare documents, accept payments, and deal with difficult situations. Therefore, our couriers are specialists with a wide range of tasks. Of course, we have vacancies for part-time work, but they are quite few. Basically, this is a full-time job with a regular schedule, route. Almost all of our leaders in delivery and logistics are yesterday’s couriers who have gained experience, studied a lot and want to develop.”
The main factor influencing the choice of work in the delivery sector is the ability to manage your time, survey participants note. The advantage of a flexible schedule was noted by about 70% of them.
