Construction of a new nuclear-powered icebreaker has started at the Baltic Shipyard

Specialists of JSC “Baltiysky Zavod” (part of the USC) started cutting specialized steel for the hull of the fifth serial universal nuclear icebreaker of project 22220, reported press service of the enterprise.

Cutting began on plasma cutting machines in the presence of representatives of the customer – Atomflot and the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping. The new serial nuclear-powered icebreaker will be the sixth in the line of nuclear-powered icebreakers of the project, built at the Baltic Shipyard.

The general director of the plant, Yuri Gordienkov, noted that the continuation of the construction of the series guarantees the stable development of the enterprise, providing it with orders until 2030. This will make it possible to modernize production and increase the number of jobs.

The main tasks of the Project 22220 icebreakers are to serve the Northern Sea Route and conduct various expeditions to the Arctic. The use of variable draft allows icebreakers to work effectively both in deep water and in shallow water in Siberian riverbeds.

May 26 Baltic Shipyard and Rosatomflot signed contract for the construction of a multifunctional nuclear technology service vessel (ISATO). The value of the contract amounted to 24.8 billion rubles.

In March it became known that the Baltic Shipyard found alternative suppliers to Finnish Wartsila equipment for Project 22220 icebreakers, but their names were not disclosed.
