The concert industry is beginning to revive, although it is still far from pre-pandemic levels. In 2023, organizers of music shows and performances will earn 36.5 billion rubles. According to a study by the InterMedia agency, cited by RBC, the figure will exceed 2022 by 10 billion rubles. However, this is 40% less than pre-pandemic levels. In 2019, revenues approached 60 billion rubles.
How has the event business adapted during this time? The formats of events and the choice of stars are changing, notes managing partner of the music label PROPS Kirill Oreshkin:
“The segment suffered 70-80%. But other areas of the concert industry began to flourish. The current trend is digital festivals. They are held in cities where artists cannot get to due to difficult logistics or climatic conditions, and avatars of the artists perform there. The market segment at the moment has really fallen very much, because, firstly, purchasing power has decreased, and, secondly, the massive number of cancellations of concerts that took place during the pandemic caused an element of mistrust among the viewer.
Which artists are the most in demand right now? Nowadays, not only concerts of category A stars are very popular – Basta, Polina Gagarina, Anna Asti and, of course, Philip Kirkorov. But also artists of categories “C” and “D”, who can attract crowds of thousands. Both the rider and the technical support for such concerts are much less expensive.
If we are talking about category “A”, these are artists with a fee of 2-3 million rubles. for the concert. And their technical rider may come out like ours with one of the artists in the city of Omsk: 3.8 million rubles. – this is only providing a technical rider and setting up the stage. As for such artists, for example, Irakli, Vanya Chebanov, Mark Tishman, the average technical rider there costs 500-600 thousand rubles.”
After the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, concerts in Russia were canceled by dozens of foreign stars, including Imagine Dragons, Green Day, The Killers, Rammstein and Twenty One Pilots. The organizers hope for their soon return, but for now they manage to bring stars of the 80s and 90s, and only a few, says PMI Corporation President Evgeniy Finkelstein:
“There are problems with festivals because the same artists perform. People have already seen them, so the competition is fierce. The artists who stayed earn completely different money. And there is a problem of insufficient content.
Now there have been a huge number of so-called tributes. Variety shows and musicals raise a lot of money. This is a direct return to the Soviet Union, when they used to come to a restaurant and watch a show. The stars must grow. They will definitely appear, but time will pass.
Who can you bring from abroad now? Now we have organized performances by seven foreigners. This is Pupo, Ottawan, these are not stars of the first magnitude, but the fact that people are starting to go is also a great success.”
The total turnover of all entertainment events at the end of this year will exceed 315 billion rubles, according to the InterMedia report. In 2022, the figure was 17% lower.
