Complex mathematics: regions predicted a decrease in demand for university technical specialties

Experts advise how an applicant should correctly weigh the chances and pass the DWI

Until recently, it was difficult to say how the 2023 admission campaign would go, especially in non-capital and not the highest ranking universities. In early June, the picture becomes clearer. There were two significant events for applicants at once. The websites of universities published information that they were eagerly waiting for: admission targets, taking into account the target, special and new separate quota. They also posted data on the number of places in hostels for non-resident students and a schedule of additional entrance tests. And schoolchildren have already written specialized mathematics. Preliminary conclusions: it will be easier to get into regional universities, and even more difficult into metropolitan ones.

It is known that in our country a policy of engineering has been proclaimed. The Ministry of Education and Science, taking into account the experience of last year, has allocated 40% of state-funded places in the country to specialties for “physicists” (and as opposed to “lyricists”). Not as many as 2022, but still a lot.

But you can’t go to the designer, developer, technologist or IT with unfinished profile mathematics. The results of the exam, which was passed on June 1, are not yet known, they will be published in the middle of the month. But there are more than enough reviews on the “profile”, and they are all in the style of “hope for 90 points down the drain, two years with a tutor down the drain.” The most alarming signals come from the regions. There, the exam in specialized mathematics was difficult, and they also gave some kind of tricky “economic and banking” task No. 15, which almost no one coped with. Well at least, for him only 2 points.

“There is nothing like this in FIPI (a bank of demo versions of tasks that will be on the exam – auth.) was not – say Perm, Petrozavodsk, Volgograd, the Arkhangelsk region, Karelia, Komi, St. Petersburg … Like, everywhere the children flew with one task. “It’s a difficult economic task, none of my friends wrote, in whole classes,” says the mother of an 11-grader, Elena from Tver. “Something about the bank rate on a loan for 5 years. Why give Olympiad problems? The second version of chemistry and profile mathematics is something out of the ordinary. I’m a teacher and I see it.”

So the first conclusion is with a massive low “profile”, only Olympiads (for them, however, a separate competition) and 100-point students can get into cool universities. But you can easily go to not so prestigious and regional universities. Another important factor in weighing the chances of admission was the emergence of a special quota in 2023, in addition to a separate one. A separate quota assumes that graduates of socially privileged categories compete for state-funded places within their own competition: orphans, disabled children, children from large families, and others. This is 10% of the budget. A special quota, which included children of SVO participants, heroes of the Russian Federation, persons awarded three Orders of Courage, etc., is new. Each university is obliged to allocate at least 10% of the budget for it, in total there are about 60 thousand places in the country.

Without any quota, but according to a special admission scenario (similar to the admission from Crimea in 2014), Russian universities will admit students from the DPR, LPR and new territories. “According to the practice that was this year, many children will choose universities in the south of the country – Donetsk, Voronezh and Belgorod universities,” commented Vice Speaker of the State Duma Boris Chernyshov. And it seems that such an influx of applicants was taken into account in the control figures for admission. But, I think, applicants from these regions, as well as Kuban, Don and Crimea, should take this factor into account when weighing their chances.

– Yes, it’s hard to give advice this year, – says Viktor Kurdyumov, an expert on university admissions and a teacher of mathematics. – Especially now, when half of the USE, including physics and programming, is ahead. But some estimates, based on the data published by universities, can already be done. Taking into account the fact that this year a system of priorities for admission appeared, but it operates only within the university, I would choose different levels for my claims. From the highest – the university of your dreams in the capital city, to some ordinary regional university. And given this situation with the Unified State Examination in mathematics, it is likely that average students with 70 points in their “profile” have a chance to get into a good specialty in a non-capital university. Well, purely statistically, one can also advise not to decide on enrollment immediately, but to leave the choice until “later”, when unoccupied places from a special quota will go to the general competition. But this is an option for an entrant with good scores, after all. And with strong nerves.

Also, as MK previously wrote, experts advise holders of additional points for the Unified State Examination not to forget that the points must be documented. For example, points for the TRP must be confirmed by the Ministry of Sports. Experts also advise not to neglect network aggregators – they are a good help to the applicant, and the average scores in each university will show, and the number of places, and “passability” can be calculated. It is necessary to carefully study the composition and schedule of additional entrance examinations (DWI) and assignments – this is especially true for the “tops” and creative universities. It is advisable to rehearse the interview according to the interviewer’s system: predict the questions that the examiners can ask and prepare answers to them in advance. Find reviews in advance or listen to those who have already passed the DWI tests at the selected university a year or two earlier. It is necessary to seriously prepare for the DWI, not to let it take its course.
