Climatologist Alexei Kokorin said that under the worst-case scenario of climate warming on the planet and an increase in the global average annual temperature, the capital of Russia could be moved to Siberia.
According to him, one of the elements of the implementation of the Paris climate agreement is carbon neutrality. The countries of the European Union and the United States of America want to achieve it by 2050, China and Russia – by 2060.
“I admit that this may happen not by the 2050s-2060s, but by the 2080s,” Kokorin noted.
He clarified that by that time the temperature on Earth will rise by about 2.5 degrees relative to the pre-industrial era. Ultimately, such changes can lead to the fact that heat waves begin to cover the planet several times more often.
“The temperature on the planet in the worst case scenario could rise by 4.5-5 degrees. Under such conditions, 8-9 years out of 10 will turn out to be abnormally hot. Another life will begin, in which life in a metropolis, for example, Moscow, will become very difficult. It is possible that in this scenario, Novosibirsk or Krasnoyarsk will become the capital of Russia, ”Kokorin emphasized.
