Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu has been removed from his post. About it reports RIA Novosti with reference to China Central Television.
“Li Shangfu has been removed from the post of Minister of Defense and Member of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China,” the message says. The reasons for the minister’s resignation are not specified.
Former Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang is also no longer a member of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China.
Li Shangfu has not appeared in public since delivering the keynote speech at the third China-Africa Peace and Security Forum on August 29. September 15 Reuters citing Vietnamese officials wrotethat the minister suddenly canceled a meeting with Vietnamese defense officials in early September “for health reasons.”
A few days later the agency reportedthat Li Shangfu is under investigation. It was alleged that he was suspected of corruption in the procurement of military equipment. According to Reuters, in addition to the minister, eight senior officials from the Chinese army’s procurement department, which Li Shangfu led from 2017 to 2022, are also involved in the case.
