Some Chinese universities advised their students not to organize memorial events in honor of the deceased former Prime Minister of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China Li Keqiang, writes the Hong Kong edition of the South China Morning Post.
Similar instructions, as sources said, were received by university management and are being distributed among students. “Mourning events can become too emotional and lead to unnecessary riots,” one said. “Similar to what happened 30-odd years ago.” In 1989, protests began in Beijing with memorial events in honor of the deceased former General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee Hu Yaobang, which led to the tragic events in Tiananmen Square.
Also, due to the mass protests that broke out in China in November 2022, a decision was made to lift Covid restrictions.
Former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang died of a heart attack on Friday night at the age of 68. The politician led the country’s government from 2013 to 2023.
