China did not include the heads of some Western countries in the list of participants in the Belt and Road Forum, writes the Chinese newspaper Global Times, citing a source familiar with the organization of the event.
According to the source, most of the invitations to the forum were sent to the leaders of developing countries, while some leaders of developed countries were excluded from the list of participants. This decision was made in connection with the emphasis on development cooperation, the source explained.
“China pays attention not so much to the number of invited leaders as to the quality and effectiveness of the forum,” the source said.
He also refuted statements by some Western media that European leaders intend to refrain from participating in the forum.
“Assumptions that Western leaders are avoiding participation are not true. It’s just that China didn’t send them invitations,” the source said.
