Zoologists led by Jan Engelmann of the University of California came to the conclusion that chimpanzees are capable of “alternative” thinking, that is, they can make a plan that provides for two scenarios. It was believed that only people possessed this skill.

During the experiment, the monkeys were asked to get a treat located in one of several tubes. In order for the shelf to open, it was necessary to throw a stone into the pipe. At the same time, the shelf had to be supported so that it would not fall and be out of the reach of the chimpanzee.

One of the pipes branched into two, that is, a stone thrown into it could open one of the two shelves. The monkeys independently guessed that in this case it is worth holding both shelves.

The work of zoologists was published in the journal Biology Letters.
