“Children come to school less and less prepared”

A study just conducted by a major education platform found out what is most difficult for children in the lower grades. “Primary school students have problems in developing the following skills: write words without spelling errors, solve text problems in mathematics, determine unstressed vowels in the root of words, solve examples using the multiplication table.”

“MK” found out from primary school teachers – how to overcome these problems?

A quarter of teachers and parents surveyed noted that children find it difficult to write words without spelling errors. The main reasons for this situation were attributed by the teachers to “the child’s poor perception of words by ear, low level of concentration and memory capacity”. It is difficult for first-graders to solve problems for movement, time and area calculation. It is not easy for them to isolate the conditions and the key question of the task. Children also have problems with computational skills, namely with multiplication by two-digit and three-digit numbers, addition and subtraction through ten, division by a column.

– First of all, I note that every year children go to the first grade more and more unprepared, – shared with the “MK” primary school teacher, speech therapist Svetlana Startseva from Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. – Kindergartens seem to be trying to prepare children for school, teach them to read, count – these are the requirements of programs for kindergarten graduates. Our wishes, as primary school teachers, are that in kindergartens, when preparing for school, educators pay more attention to the development of fine motor skills in children, so that the children have the correct grip on a pencil. Only a few know how to work with scissors, carefully perform applications, and work according to instructions. There is no skill to play board games by the rules. This, of course, should be taught not only by kindergarten, but also by parents. If we are talking about mathematics, then it should not just be counting from 1 to 10. Children should know and name neighboring numbers, forward and backward counting. The guys have a lot of problems with space. They do not know how to navigate on paper in a cage, where is the top, where is the right corner … They do not know the right and left sides, they have no idea about time periods. Few can name the days of the week, the seasons, their birthdays and those of their loved ones. They cannot correctly name the middle name of their parents or their own, they distort them.

According to the teacher, it is very difficult for children without such a foundation to study. As a separate problem, Svetlana Startseva singled out the parents’ passion for fashion trends – for example, “speed reading”. It can harm children, since they still do not know how to merge syllables correctly … Parents have the opinion that it is necessary to prepare children for the Unified State Examination, but it is not necessary for elementary school, the kindergarten, they say, will teach everything. As a result, children cannot master the most ordinary traditional program.

– How to make it easier for children to learn spelling so that they write without errors?

– I won’t discover America if I say that children now read very little. I am now in the fourth grade, and their reading technique is very lame, and their vocabulary is small. If a child does not read much, he does not know the lexical meaning of many words. And then it turns out that when, when performing a VLOOKUP, you need to paraphrase a phrase or explain the meaning of a word, then such tasks confuse children. The guys do not know how to put the accents correctly …

On the one hand, children’s enthusiasm for gadgets can also play a positive role, the teacher says, depending on the purposes for which they are used: after all, you can find useful information in them and read. But, unfortunately, more often children use phones for other entertainment purposes.

Child psychologist Olga Kondrashova gave two of the most important tips for parents of first-graders. First, moms and dads need to understand that, like any new activity, doing homework for your child is a skill that needs to be shown and helped to master. You need to open a diary with him, read homework together and with leading questions, in an affectionate manner, help the child understand them. At first, do not leave the child while he performs them. The second rule is “to be praised, encouraged and supported”. A first-grader at school is constantly in the zone of the fact that he does not know how to do something. This causes him anxiety, a feeling of uncertainty, perhaps even disappointment in himself, his abilities. It is necessary to emphasize his successes, so that he himself understands where his strengths are, and where he needs to tighten up. Complied with a difficult task praise, show how happy you are for him. He made a mistake, nothing, the main thing is that he understands that he can fix it, and believe in himself!
