Cherry blossom season officially kicked off in Tokyo on Tuesday, the National Meteorological Administration said, which records the start of the season on a special “control” tree at Yasukuni Shinto Shrine in Tokyo.
As noted, this year the metropolitan cherry blossom season started 10 days earlier than the average and, along with 2020 and 2021, turned out to be the earliest since 1953, when they began to maintain relevant statistics.
Officially, the cherry blossom season in the capital of Japan begins when five flowers open on the “control” tree in the city center. This time around, cherry blossom viewing in parks and public places, traditional for city dwellers, is likely to take place in a regular, wide format for the first time in the past three years, as the spread of the coronavirus in Japan has almost stopped, and the restrictions caused by the pandemic have been lifted.
